Fruit Salad Ingredients
When I mentioned that this recipe used simple ingredients, I wasn’t lying!
Here’s all you need to make this patriotic red, white, and blue fruit salad:
- 1 small watermelon
- 1 package of blueberries
- 1 package of pearl mozzarella cheese
- 2 sprigs of mint
How to Select Ripe Watermelon
Selecting a ripe watermelon isn’t as hard as it may seem! Here are some simple steps you can follow:
- Check the weight: Watermelons should feel heavy for their size, regardless of whether they’re big or small.
- Look at the field spot: This is the area of the watermelon that was resting on the ground while it was growing. It’s usually discolored and a little rougher than the rest of the skin. A ripe watermelon will have a creamy yellow or orange-yellow spot, not white or green.
- Tap it: Give it a good tap! If you hear a hollow sound, that’s a good sign. If it sounds dull, it might mean that it’s overripe.
- Check for uniformity: Make sure the shape of your watermelon is uniform. Irregularities might mean that it grew unevenly, which can affect its taste and texture.
- Look at the color: A shiny appearance indicates an underripe watermelon. What you want is a nice matte finish.
How to Make Red, White, and Blue Fruit Salad
Making this delicious salad is as easy as pie!
- Start by scooping out balls from a small watermelon using a melon baller.
- Next, add these along with washed blueberries into a large bowl.
- Then break up the pearl mozzarella cheese by hand and toss it in.
- Stir in some diced mint for an extra pop of freshness.
- Mix everything together and your red, white, and blue fruit salad is ready!
Store your fruit salad in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve it.
Fruit Variations for Red White and Blue Salad
You don’t have to stick with the obvious choice for each kind of fruit color, you can switch it up or even go all-out and add in extras.
Nobody said you cannot have more than one fruit of a certain color!
Here are some fruit choices for each color:
- Red Fruit: Fresh strawberries, red grapes, raspberries, pitted cherries, blood oranges
- Blue Fruits: Blueberries (the obvious!) or blackberries (although not truly blue, they can give the blue vibes in a fruit salad)
- White Fruit: White peaches, honeydew melon, canary melons, apples, white grapes, bananas, coconut
Apples and bananas tend to brown quickly once cut and exposed to air due to the process of oxidation. But don’t worry—I’ve got some tried-and-true methods that will help you keep your fruits looking as good as they taste!
- Lemon Juice: This is my go-to method! The citric acid in lemon juice slows down the oxidation process. Squeeze a little fresh lemon juice over apples and bananas, toss them gently, and they’ll retain their natural colors for longer.
- Pineapple or Orange Juice: If you’re not fond of the tartness of lemon juice, pineapple or orange juice can do the trick too! Plus, they add an extra layer of flavor to your fruit salad.
Storage and Leftovers
Keep any leftover salad in an airtight container in the fridge. It will stay fresh for up to 2 days. Trust me, it’s so tasty there might not be any leftovers!
Recipe Tips and Tricks
For a fun twist, use a small star cookie cutter to cut the watermelon into star shapes.
It adds an extra festive touch perfect for any patriotic summer fruit salad.
