Rice Krispie Christmas Trees Ingredients
-
Rice Krispie Cereal: I always prefer to buy Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal for this and not any generic versions.
-
Mini Marshmallows: The mini marshmallows are like glue and they hold everything together. When melted, they turn into that gooey goodness that makes these rice krispies treats so irresistible.
-
Butter: It helps keep the marshmallows smooth and easy to stir. Plus, it adds that rich flavor!
-
Vanilla Extract: Just a tad bit of vanilla extract adds the perfect flavor for the classic Rice Krispie Treat recipe taste.
-
Green Food Coloring: To get that bright green color to pipe onto the trees, you’ll need a few drops of green food coloring or gel food coloring. I like to use this natural food coloring.
-
White Vanilla Candy Melts or Melting Wafers: We melt up the candy or wafers and add some of the green coloring so we can pipe it onto the trees. Alternatively, you could use melted white chocolate instead.
-
Christmas Sprinkles: Add some Christmas sprinkles while the mixture is still warm.
-
Nonstick Cooking Spray: You’ll want to spray your baking dish and your hands with non-stick spray to make it easier to press the Rice Krispie mixture into the pan and cut out the tree shapes without sticking.

How to Make Rice Krispie Christmas Trees
- Get the dish ready: Start by spraying a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. This will keep the rice krispie mixture from sticking when you press it in.
- Melt the butter and marshmallows: In a large pot over low heat, melt the butter. Once it’s melted, stir in the vanilla extract, followed by the mini marshmallows. Keep stirring until everything is smooth and melted into a nice melted marshmallow mixture.
- Mix in the Rice Krispie cereal: Now, gently fold in the rice krispie cereal using a large spoon, making sure it’s well coated with the melted marshmallow mixture.
- Press the mixture into the dish: Pour the mixture into the prepared dish and press it down evenly. To make this easier, spray your hands with a little nonstick cooking spray so it doesn’t stick. Apply firm pressure to spread it out smoothly.
- Let it cool: Let the treats sit at room temperature for about an hour, so they can firm up. You’ll want them nice and set before cutting.
- Cut into tree shapes: Once cooled, flip the block of treats out of the dish. Use a Christmas tree cookie cutter to cut out the tree shapes. Be sure to spray the inside of the cookie cutter with nonstick spray between cuts to keep the treats from sticking.
- Decorate: Melt the white vanilla candy melts according to the package directions, add some green food coloring, and drizzle it over the little trees. Add Christmas sprinkles and mini m&ms for ornaments. MORE DECORATING IDEAS BELOW!

Decorating Tips and Ideas
- Pretzel Stick Trunks: One of the easiest ways to give your Christmas tree Rice Krispies a cute and edible tree trunk is to use pretzel sticks. Just stick them into the bottom of the tree.
- Mini M&M Ornaments: For colorful “ornaments,” press mini m&m candies into the trees while the marshmallow mixture is still soft. This is a fun way to add pops of color to your festive holiday treat. Plus, the kids will love picking off the candies before eating the rest!
- Christmas Sprinkles: Don’t forget the sprinkles! While the treats are still soft, sprinkle some Christmas sprinkles over the top. You can use stars, snowflakes, or any fun holiday shapes.
- Mini Reese’s Cups for the Tree Stump: Try using Mini Reese’s Cups instead of pretzel sticks to make a shorter tree trunk at the bottom of the tree. Just flip them upside down and press the tree on top for a cute and tasty stump.
- Candy Canes: Break up candy canes and press the pieces into your trees for a fun, minty crunch.
Rice Krispie Christmas Trees
Ingredients
- 6 cups Rice Krispie cereal
- 6 cups mini marshmallows
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Green food coloring
- 3/4 cup white vanilla candy melts or melting wafers
- Sprinkles
- Nonstick cooking spray
Instructions
- Spray a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large pot, melt the butter over low heat. Stir in the vanilla extract followed by the marshmallows and stir continuously until melted and smooth.
- Spread the Rice Krispie marshmallow mixture into the greased 9x13 dish. Gently press down to spread the mixture. I usually spray my hands with some nonstick cooking spray to make this process easier.
- Decorate with sprinkles, if desired while the mixture is still not set.
- Let the Rice Krispie treats cool for about an hour until set.
- Flip the rectangle of Rice Krispie treats out of the dish. Cut out Rice Krispies with a tree cookie cutter. Spray the inside of the cookie cutter with nonstick cookie spray between cutting each one to prevent them from sticking.
- Melt the candy melts in microwave according to package directions and add some green food coloring. Drizzle the melted candy over the christmas trees to decorate and decorate with more sprinkles and m&ms, if desired.
No Cookie Cutter Method
- Use a large knife to cut the block of treats into triangles. I cut the block down the middle the long way, splitting it into two long rectangles. Then I cut each section at an angle to make triangles.
