Homemade Taco Sauce

I recently found myself needing a jar of taco sauce. Normally I’d use store-bought taco sauce because, well, it’s EASY. But I was in a pinch and couldn’t make it to the store, so I made my own.

And guess what?

Just like with most everything else that you make from scratch instead of buying a store-bought version… it tasted BETTER. And it is WAY cheaper.

Makes me question my judgement on all that taco sauce I’ve bought over the years.

I’m not sure why I didn’t start making my own taco sauce sooner. It’s seriously just as easy as can be. You can make it ahead of time or you can make it right when you need it.

Ingredients for Homemade Taco Sauce

  • Tomato Sauce: This is the base of your taco sauce, providing a rich and thick texture.
  • White Vinegar: Adds a tangy flavor that balances the richness of the tomato sauce. For a twist, you can try apple cider vinegar.
  • Ground Cumin: Cumin adds a warm, earthy flavor that’s essential in Mexican cuisine. It pairs wonderfully with the chili powder to give your taco sauce that authentic taste.
  • Onion Powder and Garlic Powder: These powders provide a concentrated burst of flavor without the need for chopping fresh onions or garlic. They make the sauce making process much quicker and easier.
  • Garlic Salt: It enhances the garlic flavor in the sauce and adds saltiness, reducing the need for additional salt.
  • Chili Powder: Gives the sauce its characteristic heat and a smoky flavor. If you’re adventurous, explore variations like ancho chili powder for a different taste.
  • Paprika: Adds a sweet and smoky flavor to the sauce. Smoked paprika can be used for a smokier variation.
  • White Sugar: Just a little bit helps balance the acidity of the tomato sauce and vinegar, enhancing the overall taste.
  • Cayenne Pepper: A pinch of cayenne adds a spicy kick. Adjust according to your heat preference.

How to Make Homemade Taco Sauce

  • Combine Ingredients in a Saucepan: In a small saucepan, stir together the tomato sauce, water, white vinegar, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, garlic salt, chili powder, paprika, sugar, and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Simmer to Perfection: Cook the sauce mixture on low heat. Allow it to simmer on medium/low heat until it thickens slightly, which should take about 20 minutes. This slow cooking process helps to meld the flavors together for that perfect tangy and smoky flavor.
  • Cool Before Serving: Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly. This makes the sauce just the right consistency for drizzling over your favorite tacos or using as a dipping sauce.

How to Store

  1. Cool the Sauce: Once you’ve cooked your sauce, let it cool down. This is important to prevent condensation inside the container, which can affect the sauce’s quality.
  2. Choose the Right Container: Transfer your homemade taco sauce into an airtight container. Mason jars are perfect for this, as they seal tightly and are just the right size for storing sauce.
  3. Refrigeration: Store the airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Freezing Taco Sauce

If you’ve made a big batch and want to save some for later, freezing is a great option.

Pour the sauce into small freezer bags or ice cube trays for easy portion control. Once frozen, you can transfer the cubes into a bag, saving space and making it easy to thaw only what you need.

Thawing and Reheating: When you’re ready to use your frozen taco sauce, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator. Reheat it on low heat in a small saucepan or pot, stirring occasionally until it’s warm.

Ways to Use Homemade Taco Sauce

  • Spice Up Taco Night: Use homemade taco sauce on your taco meat to add amazing flavor.
  • Enhance Taco Salads: Drizzle the sauce over taco salads for an extra burst of flavor.
  • Mexican Inspired Dishes: Incorporate it into other Mexican food dishes, such as enchiladas or burritos, to add depth and richness.
  • Dipping Sauce for Snacks: Serve the taco sauce as a dipping sauce for appetizers like quesadillas, nachos, or even just plain chips.
  • Marinade for Meats: Use it as a marinade for meats before grilling or baking. The acid from lime juice and vinegar tenderizes the meat, while the spices infuse it with flavor.
  • Flavor Booster for Soups and Stews: Stir some taco sauce into soups and stews to add a complex flavor profile. It works well in chili, chicken soup, or any broth-based dish, providing a subtle heat and richness.
  • Enhanced Breakfast Dishes: Add a new dimension to breakfast items like scrambled eggs or omelets by topping them with some of my taco sauce.
  • Create a Creamy Taco Sauce: Blend the homemade taco sauce with sour cream to make a creamy version.

Variations and Add-ins

Feel free to customize this easy homemade taco sauce to your liking. Here are some easy ways to do that:

  • Add Smokiness: For a smoky variation, add smoked paprika or a pinch of ancho chili powder.
  • Add Some Tang: If you prefer a tangy flavor, substitute apple cider vinegar for the white vinegar.
  • Make it Creamy: For a creamy taco sauce, blend in some sour cream or add a bit of lime juice for a fresh twist.
  • Add Heat: Like it spicy? Add some hot sauce to it!
  • Add Herbs or Peppers: Experimenting with fresh herbs or poblano peppers can also introduce new flavors to your homemade taco sauce.
