Ingredients for Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy
This easy recipe has simple ingredients, making it perfect to throw together for the ultimate comfort food!
-
Chicken Breast: For this easy crockpot chicken and gravy recipe, use boneless skinless chicken breasts. They cook perfectly in the slow cooker, becoming tender and easy to shred.
-
Onion Soup Mix: Adds a rich flavor to the gravy with minimal effort. If you prefer something a little different, you can use packets of chicken gravy mix combined with a bit of onion powder for a similar taste.
-
Cream of Chicken Soup: Creates a creamy base for the gravy. You can substitute with a can of cream of mushroom soup, but the flavors will change slightly.
-
Chicken Broth: Enhances the savory gravy flavor. For a little extra flavor, you could also use homemade chicken broth or add a teaspoon of chicken bouillon to a cup of water.
-
Water: If you find your gravy too thick after cooking, you can add a little bit of water until it reaches your desired thickness.
-
Black Pepper: Adds a simple, spicy touch to the chicken and gravy. Freshly ground black pepper gives the best results.
-
All-Purpose Flour: Used to thicken the gravy.
-
Garlic Powder: Adds some delicious garlicky flavors to the gravy.
-
Poultry Seasoning: A blend of herbs that complements the chicken and gravy with extra flavor. If you have fresh herbs, like rosemary and thyme, you can use those for a fresher take.
How To Make This Crockpot Chicken and Gravy Recipe
-
Prepare Your Crockpot: Place the boneless skinless chicken breasts at the bottom of a crockpot that’s at least 3 quarts in size.
-
Mix the Gravy Ingredients: Combine the onion soup mix, cream of chicken soup, chicken broth, water, black pepper, flour, garlic powder, and poultry seasoning. Whisk it together well so that it’s well combined and smooth. Pour the mixture over the chicken breasts in your crockpot.
-
Combine Chicken and Gravy Mixture: Pour the gravy mixture over the chicken breasts in your crockpot.
-
Cook: Set your crockpot to cook on low for 6-8 hours. This slow cooking time allows the chicken to become tender and the flavors to meld together beautifully, making it an easy slow cooker meal that’s super easy to prep.
-
Shred the Chicken: After the cooking time is complete, remove the chicken from the crockpot. Shred it with a fork into bite-sized pieces, then return the shredded chicken back into the crockpot to soak up the savory gravy.
Serving Suggestions
This slow cooker chicken and gravy recipe makes the best darn gravy around, and I’m all about the gravy!
Y’all, this is some mighty fine gravy. Make sure to serve your chicken and gravy with homemade mashed potatoes, creamed potatoes, biscuits, hot steamed rice, or something else to sop up all that delish gravy.
Egg noodles are another great way to enjoy this recipe! If you use noodles, you could toss in a spoonfull of sour cream for a gravy reminiscent of stroganoff!
Growing up, when there was gravy, there was bread. The bread wasn’t just food in our house, it was a dining utensil. I mean, how else are you supposed to get all that yummy gravy off your plate? Gotta have you some bread! Try my Longhorn Bread Recipe with it, you’ll love it so much!

Recipe Tips
- Making this crock pot chicken recipe from scratch means that you can easily double this recipe if your crockpot or slow cooker is large enough.
- Try boneless skinless chicken thighs instead of breasts to change it up.
- Use boneless skinless chicken breasts to make it easy, otherwise, you’ll have to pull the chicken off the bone before serving.
- I like to shred the chicken and then put the shredded chicken back into the gravy, but you can also slice it or serve it whole.
Storage Instructions
This is such an easy Crockpot Chicken and Gravy recipe, and there are rarely any leftovers in my house. If you have leftovers, store the chicken and the gravy in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
You can also freeze leftovers in a freezer-safe container or plastic bag for up to 3 months. Just pack the chicken in the gravy to keep it moist.
